We have reason to celebrate today! Over two weeks ago we woke up to the smell of electronic components burning. The smell filled our entire downstairs for a few days. Our computer had died in its sleep. :( Luckily we keep all of our important stuff on an external hard drive so it wouldn't have been too devastating. However, configuring a new PC with all of our programs and settings would have been a job.
Lucky for us we have some mad electronic skills ;) That and our desperation to have a home PC and the fact that it is definitely NOT in the budget right now to go plunk down $2500+ on a new Mac Pro.
No, we didn't find the burned component and solder a new one on . . we're not that awesome. We did however sniff out the burned area (thanks to my pregnant super nose) to the power supply. There G used his mad multimeter skills to .... well I'm not really sure he knew what he was looking for, but I know for a fact he read a couple 5V's! Then we just decided to chance it and order a new power supply.
It was delivered today, we installed it, and BAM!!! We now have a working PC again!
Long live our little HP Slimline PC.
